Headlight Installation FAQ's
That estimate is right — most halogen headlight bulbs last roughly 500–1,000 hours of use. To put that in everyday terms: if you drive about 1 hour per day (≈365 hours/year), that’s roughly 1.4–2.7 years of service.
- Halogen: ~500–1,000 hours (common in many cars)
- HID/Xenon: typically ~2,000+ hours
- LED: much longer — often 10,000–30,000+ hours, though real-world lifespan can be limited by electrical or housing issues
Factors that shorten bulb life: frequent short trips, lots of night driving, vibration, poor electrical connections, aftermarket bulbs, and extreme temperatures. Signs it’s time to replace: dimming, color change, flickering, or one bulb burning out.
Common signs of a bad headlight bulb include dim or flickering light, one headlight going out while the other still works, or a headlight that won’t turn on at all. If you’re uncertain, Pep Boys technicians can quickly check your headlights and replace any faulty bulbs to keep you driving safely.
If your headlights are cloudy, restoration can improve clarity and extend their life. For severely damaged or aged headlights, replacement is the better option for safe visibility.
