State Inspection FAQ's

Vehicle inspection requirements depend on the type of inspection you're referring to — safety inspection (required statewide) or emissions inspection (required in specific areas).

Safety Inspection: Every 12 Months

All vehicles registered in Virginia must undergo an annual safety inspection performed by state-certified stations
This includes checking brakes, lights, tires, steering, suspension, exhaust, and other safety systems

Emissions Inspection: Every 2 Years

Emissions testing is required every two years, but only for garaged vehicles
Vehicles in those locations must have emissions testing to renew registration. Outside these areas, it's not required despite the annual safety inspection

A state inspection typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your vehicle’s condition and the inspection station’s workload. If issues are found that require repairs, the process may take longer.

If your vehicle doesn’t pass its emissions inspection, our technicians can perform the necessary repairs to correct the issue—whether it’s replacing a faulty sensor, fixing an exhaust leak, or servicing the catalytic converter—so your car meets compliance standards and is ready to pass retesting.
